Historic Venetian Cafés and Osterias

First off, we’ll visit Caffé Florian. It’s a historic café situated in the “Procuratie Nuove” of Piazza San Marco in Venice. It was established in 1720 and has the title of the oldest “watering-hole” in Italy.

Caffè Florian opened with two simply furnished rooms on December 29, 1720, as “Caffè alla Venezia Trionfante,” but was very soon known as Caffè Florian, after its original owner Floriano Francesconi. The elegant ambiance attracted many famous people of the time such as Carlo Goldoni, Goethe and Casanova (who was most likely attracted by the fact that Caffè Florian was the only cafè open to the gentle sex). Frequent visitors also included Lord Byron, Marcel Proust and Charles Dickens.

We’ll also visit some Venetian osterias. The best way to encounter the most hidden and secret corners of Venice, as well as Venetians, is through a “Bacaro Tour,” called in Venetian “andar par ombre.” The “bacaro” is a little Venetian osteria with a vast choice of cicchetti — little snacks with meat or fish — and “ombre” are glasses of wine.

Alvise will take you to some of the bacari spread across the city. These are the hangouts of locals, where one can enjoy a glass of wine or a spritz (the famous Venetian aperitivo) served with traditional Venetian finger food.

Discover Venice through the eyes of a real Venetian!

My name is Alvise. It’s a very common name here in Venice, used by the Doges during the period of the Most Serene Republic of Venice. In English, it could be creatively translated as Elvis! I was born and raised in Venice and after I completed my studies in Art History and the Conservation of Cultural Heritage at the University of Venice, I decided to start on the path of becoming a professional tour guide.

I’ve had several work experiences abroad, both in Great Britain and the United States, over a period of two years. I’ve also worked as an actor in small roles in various films here in Venice. I’ve worked at events, art exhibitions and I also played for a semi-professional soccer team.
