Directed by Gianni Amelio (2017)
Director Gianni Amelio finds loneliness and pain in the heart of old Naples in his character study headlined by Renato Carpentieri and Micaela Ramazzotti. La Tenerezza was liberally inspired by the book The Temptation to Be Happy, by Lorenzo Marone.
Back from the hospital where he has been treated after a heart attack, Lorenzo is on his way upstairs to his top-floor apartment in Naples when he meets Michela. The charming young woman, who has just moved to the facing apartment, has forgotten her keys and finds herself locked out. Cynical and grumpy, the retired lawyer who has been living estranged from the rest of the world, would normally leave her to her fate but he mellows under her spontaneous charm. He helps her, and shortly becomes friends with her and her husband Fabio and their two children. Soon, Lorenzo becomes part of their family, spending more time with them and their children than with his own adult children, and the joy of living, which had seemed lost, returns to him. That is until one evening, returning home, Lorenzo finds a terrible uproar in the building. Something has occurred that will affect them all.
