Indivisibili (Indivisible)

Directed by Edoardo de Angelis (2017)

In this film Edoardo de Angelis deals with a handicap that finds people divided on how to deal with it. The film is a tale of conjoined twins at the age of 18, facing a handicap that could be overcome by surgery but is not. The reason it’s not, is simply “money.” It’s an emotionally intense drama with moments of black comedy and a structure that resembles a religious parable.

The beautiful voices of Viola (Angela Fontana) and Daisy (Marianna Fontana), who are named after the actual English conjoined twins Violet and Daisy Hilton, would probably not be much of a draw if they were “normal.” The twins have made their parents and priests a good amount of money with their singing at weddings, confirmation ceremonies and similar events. People also pay money to touch them because they are supposed to represent a miracle, capable of bringing good luck.

When the sisters are told by a doctor that they could be separated, since they are joined at the hip and do not share major organs, the father insists that the doctor butt out as does the potential handler/impresario for the twins. While Daisy dreams of going through the separation procedure so she can travel the world and make love, Viola thinks only of tagging along with her.

Tensions over separation are not limited to the girls. Their parents continually argue and seem to be together only out of habit. Their father and uncle are intensely focused on the duty of each member to the family unit, and warn the girls — bright, talented young women that they are — that if they weren’t conjoined, nobody would consider them to be worth anything. They are surrounded by hypocrites of one sort or another, not least in relation to religion, which permeates everything.

NOTE: The film is in Italian with ENGLISH subtitles.

After the viewing there will be a light reception and a discussion of the film.
