The City of Como

New Date & Time:
Sunday, April 16, 2023

10:00–11:30 a.m. (Central Daylight Time)
Presented in English

Discover the beautiful town of Como, overlooking one of the most famous lakes in the world. Stroll around the medieval center and admire the cathedral and half-timbered houses.

During our tour, we will take the old cable car (first launched in 1894) for some breathtaking views of the lake and then reach a lighthouse on the top of the hill. From the top of this lighthouse, you will notice the views over the lake, see the roads that lead to Switzerland and learn of Como’s historical importance in commerce.

We will also discuss two of Como’s renowned citizens, Plinius the Elder and Alessandro Volta. Alessandro Volta was a pioneer in the science of electricity and is considered the inventor of the electric battery and discoverer of methane. (In 1881, scientists decided that the unit of electric potential would be called the volt to recognize Volta’s great contributions to electrical science.) The city recently dedicated a stunning monument designed by Daniel Liebeskind and a museum in Volt’s honor.

Last, but not least, you will have a chance to see one of the most famous villas that line the lake: Villa Olmo. Since 1924 the villa belongs to the city of Como which, after its restoration, has been designated as a venue for cultural events. The exquisite gardens are open year round.

About Our Guides:

Mirella Maestri

I am Mirella. I was born and raised in Piedmont, in the north of Italy. To me, it’s still one of the most beautiful places on earth. I moved to Milan almost 20 years ago. I have a degree in archaeology and a post-graduate specialization in Medieval archaeology. For many years I worked in field archaeology and as a tour guide in both Piedmont and Milan.

Since 2018, I have also been working as a teacher of Italian as a foreign language after obtaining the DITALS certification. I am a life enthusiast, a people person and I love being the bridge between my culture and others. My passions are history, art, languages, travel, food and … fashion.

Debora Zanotti

I was born and raised in Monza, a nice city near Milan. I graduated in Linguistic and Cultural Mediation and studied Chinese and English language and culture. A passion for travel has allowed me to explore art and history and start a career as a tour guide in Milan. I love this city and its atmosphere. I collaborate with various cultural associations and Milanese tour operators.

Two years ago, I gained the DITALS I certification for teaching Italian to adults given by the University for Foreigners of Siena. I currently teach Italian to foreigners, offering the Italian language in the most entertaining way possible. I like to talk about art, food, politics and cultures with my students.
