Sounds in Italian Language

This course is structured into five (2-hour) lessons during which students will focus on listening to and producing the main sounds of the Italian language. Additionally, students will practice the phonosyntactic combination of selected words as well as voice intonation to express questions, statements and moods. This class is suitable for students at all levels.

Reading Rome

In this reading and discussion group, we’ll experience Rome through the eyes and words of four renowned authors, two native Italians and two adoptive Italians. In the works we’ll read, we’ll encounter diverse insights into the Eternal City that is ever-changing, and into the multiplicities of what it means to be Italian and to live in Italy. Whether you want to expand your familiarity with Rome itself or with Italian literature, this course is sure to spark discussion and provide new perspectives.
This class is for students of all levels and no prior knowledge of Italian is required. Works can be read in Italian or English translations based on each participant’s ability and preference.
Works to be read and discussed include selections from:
• Alberto Moravia, Racconti romani (Italian edition — paperback or Kindle)
Roman Tales (English edition out of print, scans will be provided)
• Jhumpa Lahiri, Racconti romani (Italian edition — Kindle)
Roman Stories (English edition — hardcover or Kindle)
• Carlo Emilio Gadda, Quer pasticciaccio brutto di via Merulana

(English edition — paperback)
Most of these books can also be found through the public library, though there may be a limited number of copies.
