On the verge of selling her family’s beach house, Caterina Astengo, upon impulse, dials the number of her childhood home…only to hear her adolescent self answer.
On the other end of the line, it’s 1981. Caterina soon realizes that in just a few days her father’s colleague will be killed and, shortly thereafter, her father will go missing. So begins the communication between the two as present-day Caterina tries to prepare the child to prevent her father’s eventual disappearance. As the story unravels, more and more questions emerge about her father, revealing a dark family past that Caterina may not be prepared to face.
La Scoperta Dell’Alba, directed by Susanna Nicchiarelli, is based on a novel by the same name, written by former Roman mayor Walter Veltroni. It might seem incongruous— a Roman politician and novelist— but Veltroni manages to weave politics and political history into a compelling narrative and character study. Veltroni, who served as mayor from 2001 to 2008, explores an interesting and troubled time in Italy’s recent past— the bloody terrorism that permeated the country in the ’70s and early ’80s.
