The Most Historic Cookies in Piemonte
They’re called Krumiri and they’re the symbol of Sentieri founder Daniela Cavallero’s hometown of Casale Monferrato in the Piemonte region.
Made with only flour, butter, eggs, sugar, and vanillin, it seems that the famous cookies were invented almost by accident. After a night out with his friends, pasticciere Domenico Rossi returned to his confectioner’s kitchen to whip up something sweet for the group. It was there that he first created Krumiri.
Since its inception in 1878, the original recipe has remained unaltered. The cookie is immediately recognized by its curved form, which is said to be in the shape of King Vittorio Emanuele’s handlebar mustache— Rossi’s omage to the man who unified Italy.
